Find inspiration

Great artists are good in conveying their emotions through their songs. They find inspiration that can spark that creativity and urge to write something. Sometimes, there are events in their lives they want to record through writing. It could be a painful break-up, the birth of their first child, they met someone interesting, or simply they enjoy the company of their cat.

Move your body

Many composers believe that they become more effective whenever they had a good exercise. It helps them to be more focused and creative in writing songs. While exercising, their mind goes into a traveling state and ask themselves questions on what should be the feeling of their music, what note they would use, and how to arrange it. Once the exercising session is done, they write their thoughts and proceed with the composing process.

Travel

Travel is a great way to unplug and refresh your mind from that the things that’s keeping you from writing good music. Great artist that we know bring their guitar whenever they travel. They say that ideas come when you least expect it and usually when you are not trying too hard. And when ideas come, they play their guitar and write the notes and lyrics.

Start with the basic

Professional composers suggest that you learn the basic first. Listen to the beat and count to learn the timing and phasing of the song. Once you have mastered the tempo, it’s time to learn the chords. Musicians recommend that you start with chords instead of learning the notes. Because when you learn the basic chords it’s easy to play any songs and it gives you versatility without being dependent to a music sheet.

Record everything

According to composers, you should record everything. The best way to know your progress is to record everything. Sometimes, artists tend to make many changes to the song, they often listen to their draft recordings to find out which works and which not. They check recordings if there are details of the song worth keeping or needs furnishing.
